General

Welcome to the official Advantage Database Server feedback forum. Do you have an idea? We want to hear from you!

We always do our best to keep you informed of our future product plans, however keep in mind the product roadmap, features, enhancements, timelines and dates discussed in this forum are forward looking and are subject to change. Sybase iAnywhere retains sole discretion as to when, if ever, discussed enhancements will occur.

Feedback:

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Provide Responses to Feedback

It would be nice if there were more responses from ADS in both this forum and in the developer zone forum.

    • STDDEV() and STDDEVPOP() aggregate functions

The STDDEV() and STDDEVPOP() aggregate functions would be a nice addition to the other built-in aggregate functions like AVG(), SUM() or COUNT().

      • Connection Shared Locking of Datasets

There are two lock states for a dataset right now: locked and not locked.
If you open an ADS connection and start a transaction then you get ADS handles for each table you open. But if the table is closed and another following process in the same transaction needs to alter the same dataset again you get a new ADS handle for the table - in fact you are opening a new table and in this case the dataset is still locked by the closed table.

On the TAdsQuery side you can perform multiple operations on the same dataset within…

            • Allow Index Hints in SQL by Ordinal or Tag

With Tdataset you can specify the index to use. You however can't do the same with Advantages SQL implementation as you can with others.

How to achieve this is up to your developers but it wouldn't be a bad idea to copy how it's done in other systems.

              SELECT *
FROM tablename WITH (INDEX = 1)
              WHERE Column1 = 'value'

              OR

              SELECT *
FROM tablename WITH (INDEX = tag)
              WHERE Column1 = 'value'

              • Add VSS Support

Add a VSS Writer so that VSS based backup solutions can backup raw Advantage databases without risk of corruption. Similar in functionality to Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange, etc.

                • "using" Join Syntax

In MySQL you can use syntax similar to the following:

                  SELECT * FROM table1 INNER JOIN table2 USING field1;

                  As opposed to:

                  SELECT * FROM table1 INNER JOIN table2 on table1.field1 = table2.field1;

This is handy when joining two tables using a field that has the same name in both tables.

                  • list of events created

complement the event store procedures, adding the list of the events created at the server (not the signaled events).
This will help to create semaphores.

                        • IPv6 support

This is 2016 and many are moving to IPv6 on the LAN before on the WAN. An application that doesn't work via IPv6 is a roadblock. ADS has to be able to communicate via network and without IPv6 support that's impossible in certain circumstances.

AdsDosIp for legacy Clipper applications. You can get it to run as a service, but it does not work - qAx_Loaded(cDrive) returns .f.

                            • Support script variables in cursor declaration

Would be nice if you could use script variables in cursor declarations. For example, using a variable as a table name. Currently you must construct the cursor statement using strings and execute it with EXECUTE IMMEDIATE. This works fine except that EXECUTE IMMEDIATE doesn't return any results. Any results from the cursor must be temporarily stored elsewhere for use later.

                                  • Put the comparer generated script directly into an SQL tab

At the moment when you click the generate SQL button in the dictionary comparer it will first show the SQL output in an edit window, you then have to click an a button in order to get the output in a new script tab.

                                    That is totally unnecessary.

                                    • VARCHAR should use variable amount of disk space

People typically use VARCHAR() to make better use of resources, like disk space. So we would use VARCHAR(100) instead of CHAR(100) if we thought that the max of 100 characters would not be used in many rows of the table. I believe in this example Advantage ADT tables use the full 100 characters of disk space for either type, regardless of the number of characters actually stored in that column in a given row. And for NVARCHAR() it is twice as bad.

                                        • Implement ODBC driver for Apple Macs

Apple Macs are found more and more on desktops, also on business ones. To enable Mac users to get ADS data e.g. for MS Word documents, MS Excel spreadsheets, an ODBC driver implementation for Mac would be a great achievement on a small effort.
